REVIEW
The Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that an hour’s reflection is better than a lifetime of worship. This latest book of Hajj Abdalhaqq Bewley is the fruit of a lifetime’s reflection and a catalyst for a lifetime’s reflection. It is also very practical. It deals with actions and the meanings of these actions and the results of these actions, in this world and in the next. It is a reliable source of knowledge for those who rely on Allah, or who wish that they could rely on Allah. Above all, this book is illuminated by a knowledge which has been transmitted from living heart to living heart.  Accordingly it is vast but not encyclopaedic. Since words tether meanings, it is also grounded in the understanding of well known reliable written sources of recorded knowledge which have been studied in depth. Accordingly it is the work of a scholar, but not of an academic. The Qur’an tells us that the people of knowledge are those who fear Allah (Qur’an: 35.28) ~ not those who accumulate information.

Since the author, together with his wife Hajja Aisha Bewley, has been deeply involved in the translations from Arabic into English of the Noble Qur’an, Al-Muwatta of Imam Malik and Ash-Shifa of Qadi ’Iyad, as well as many other key Islamic texts, and since it is clear from the quotations he provides that he is well and widely read, it must have been difficult for him at times when writing this book to decide what to include and what to exclude ~ and yet this book is full of abundance and bereft of deficiency. Indeed whenever I thought that an important point had been omitted, I usually found it later on in the book. The author has so much knowledge to impart that it is presented in due measure so that it can be absorbed and retained. ----Hajji Ahmad Thomson [April 2009]

The first formulation of Islamic Law based on the behaviour of the people of Madinah during the time of the great Companions, Al-Muwatta is the blueprint for a just and radiant society: the earliest, clearest, cleanest record of early  Islam. It is  divided into 61 books on different subjects, each book containing many ahadith. The numbering system used by Imam Malik May Allah be pleased with him is consecutive per book

Malik's Muwatta ("the well-trodden path") is a collection of two items:

  1.
    1) the sayings and deeds of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad May Allah shower His Mercy upon him (also known as the sunnah). The reports of the Noble Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala alayhi wa Sallam's sayings and deeds are called ahadith.
    2) the legal opinions and decisions of the Noble Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala alayhi wa Sallam's Companions, their successors, and some later authorities.

Imam Malik (full name Malik bin Anas bin Malik bin Abu Amir Al-Asbahi) May Allah be pleased with him was born in 93 A.H. and died in 179 A.H. Written by Qadi ‘Iyad of the historical Murabitun movement of North Africa and Spain which revived Islam there after it had become decadent and the Muslims had fallen into internecine conflict. He is also the author of the famous Ash Shifa.

The Foundations of Islam is the translation by Aisha Bewley of Qadi ‘Iyad's al-I‘lam bi Qawa‘id al-Islam, which summarises the essential knowledge of the five pillars of Islam in an easy memorable form. It is transmitted here from the practice of the People of Madinah by Qadi ‘Iyad who is one of the pillars of scholarship whose works on hadith and the biography of the Prophet Muhammad, May Allah bless him and grant him peace, are relied upon by Muslims in both the east and the west.

It is a clear-cut manual laid out in five sections corresponding to the five pillars, and marked out with the simplicity of a basic technical manual. For each pillar the Fard, Sunnah, Superogatory, Liked, Disliked and Prohibited are concisely listed, with special page markings for easy reference and study. The Bequest : al-Wasiyya       by: al-Shaykh Abd al-Mahmud al-Hafyan of Tabat  Paperback - 84 pages                                      Transated by Uthman Sayyid Ahmad Ismail al-Bili

About this book : A great Sufi leader, an accomplished Maliki scholar, a poet and an erudite, spirited writer, the late al-Shaykh Abd al-Mahmud al-Hafyan of Tabat (1919–1973), author of The Bequest (Al-Wasiyya), left a great legacy of scholarly works in all fields of the traditional Islamic sciences. Yet although his contributions to the science of the sharia are outstanding, it is his contributions in the field of haqiqa that most highly rank him amongst the most distinguished of Sufi Muslims.

Sharia for Sufi Muslims is the base of their belief, laws and practice. Haqiqa is the essence, the fundamental truth that leads, through worship, devotion and the love and fear of Allah, to the knowledge and recognition of the Divine, Allah. It paves the way to harmonious living in this world and to eternal bliss in Paradise. Thus to describe Sufism simply as mysticism and Sufis only as mystics is to deny both their base and their legitimacy. The haqiqa of the Sufi Muslim cannot exist without the Qur’an and the Sunna (Prophetic traditions).

This translation of the Wasiyya, The Bequest, is but an approximation of the deep yet elegantly and lucidly stated meanings of the sharia and the haqiqa of Islam. It addresses not only the followers of the Samaniyya Order, or even all Muslims, but all men and women, young and old, who care to listen to the advice of a noble spirit and a great Sufi Muslim, whose influence transcends his time and place.

The author al-Shaykh Abd al-Mahmud al-Hafyan (The Bare-footed) bin al-shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Jayli bin al-Ustadh al-Shayk Abd al-Mahmud al shaykh Nur al-Dayim bin (The Great Qutb al-Shaykh Ahmad al-Tayyib bin al-Shaykh al-Bashir was born in 1919 in the town Tabat Gezira, in Central Sudan.
