Seven Doors to Islam - Spirituality and the Religious Life of Muslims

Paperback - 317+ pages                                                                       by John Renard

Seven Doors to Islam reveals the religious worldview and spiritual tradition of the world's one billion Muslims. Spanning the breadth of Islamic civilisation from Morocco to Indonesia, this book demonstrates how Muslims have used the literary and visual arts in all their richness and diversity to communicate religious values.

Each of the seven chapters opens a "door" that leads progressively closer to the very heart of Islam, from the foundational revelation in the Qur'an to the transcendent experience of the Sufi mystics. However, unlike most studies of Islam, which see spirituality as the concern of a minority of mystical seekers, Seven Doors demonstrates its central role in every aspect of the Islamic tradition.

Reviews

"This book will open more than seven doors for most readers who come to it. . . . Above all, the present survey displays the virtue of a single controlling hand that guides the reader through multiple cultural traditions and complex linguistic developments. One goal is paramount: to make evident not only the importance and difficulty of Islamic idioms but also their beauty and vitality. . . . The pictures, almost 40 black-and-white half plates, are chosen with the same deft attention to detail and nuance as the texts that they accompany. The book as a whole sets a new, very high standard. . . . Enthusiastically recommended." Choice

"Drawing on the wealth of religious experience as articulated by Muslims from a variety of periods and places in their literature, ritual, art, and architecture, John Renard has fashioned a wonderfully textured and profound examination of Islamic spirituality. Seven Doors to Islam, a title that takes its cue from the legend of Joseph and Zulaykha, is a tour de force examination of seven aspects of Islamic spirituality: revelation, ritual, ethics, aesthetics, community, knowledge, and experience."
—Turkish Studies Association Bulletin

"An erudite but accessible introduction to the varied manifestations of spirituality in the Islamic religious and cultural tradition." —Journal of the American Academy of Religion

"Renard moves away from the exaggerated importance often placed upon Islamic law and emphasizes the centrality of Sufi modes of thought and practice to lived religious experience in most parts of the Islamic world. . . . While concentrating on core themes, Renard does not gloss over the essential diversity of a worldwide religious community." —MESA Bulletin

"[Renard] draws his insights into Muslim spirituality and religious life from a broad array of writings and religious practices throughout the Islamic world." —Theology Digest

"A comprehensive tour of the exuberant landscape of Muslim religious life, past and present. With an impressive array of textual and visual works, Renard's kaleidoscopic survey sounds the death toll to the longstanding misconception that Islam is a dry and mechanistic religion devoid of spirituality. This is the best introductory book on Islam currently available." —Ahmet T. Karamustafa, Washington University

"Comprehensive and accessible, this book is a richly textured and wide-ranging introduction to Islamic spirituality and a refreshing change from the obsession with current politics that characterizes most approaches of Islam." —Carl W. Ernst, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Understanding Islam and the Muslims The Muslim Family, Islam and World Peace

Paperback - 99 pages + 190 Colour Photographs                 by Tim Winter and John A Williams

Myths and misunderstanding continue to proliferate about Islam and its millions of followers worldwide. Through stunning photography provided by ARAMCO World and an accessible question and answer format this newly-expanded version of America’s most popular short introduction to the key precepts of Islam offers succinct, and sometimes surprising, answers to frequently asked questions about the Muslim faith.

Written by eminent scholars T.J. Winter, Lecturer in Islamic Studies at Cambridge University, and John A. Williams of the College of William and Mary’s Department of Religion, this new version of a classic work is unique in that it has the endorsement of Al Azhar University of Cairo, which has been the center of Islamic study for the entire Muslim world since 969 C.E.

Review
“Through its text and photographs, this book seeks to replace inaccurate images of Islam with recognition of the multi-faceted character of this global religion and its widely diverse adherents. It cannot be reduced to stereotypes. Islam is not inherently violent, nor are Muslims intrinsically prone to violence.”
----Bruce B. Lawrence, Professor of Islamic Studies, Duke University

EXTRACT FROM THE INTRODUCTION

'' Each of the elements mentioned [in the hadith] is dealt with individually at some length and the result is a comprehensive overview of Islam which will hopefully dispel some commonly held misconceptions and give a clear picture of how the Muslims understand and practise their religion on a day to day basis.''

REVIEW
The Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that an hour’s reflection is better than a lifetime of worship. This latest book of Hajj Abdalhaqq Bewley is the fruit of a lifetime’s reflection and a catalyst for a lifetime’s reflection. It is also very practical. It deals with actions and the meanings of these actions and the results of these actions, in this world and in the next. It is a reliable source of knowledge for those who rely on Allah, or who wish that they could rely on Allah. Above all, this book is illuminated by a knowledge which has been transmitted from living heart to living heart.  Accordingly it is vast but not encyclopaedic. Since words tether meanings, it is also grounded in the understanding of well known reliable written sources of recorded knowledge which have been studied in depth. Accordingly it is the work of a scholar, but not of an academic. The Qur’an tells us that the people of knowledge are those who fear Allah (Qur’an: 35.28) ~ not those who accumulate information.

Since the author, together with his wife Hajja Aisha Bewley, has been deeply involved in the translations from Arabic into English of the Noble Qur’an, Al-Muwatta of Imam Malik and Ash-Shifa of Qadi ’Iyad, as well as many other key Islamic texts, and since it is clear from the quotations he provides that he is well and widely read, it must have been difficult for him at times when writing this book to decide what to include and what to exclude ~ and yet this book is full of abundance and bereft of deficiency. Indeed whenever I thought that an important point had been omitted, I usually found it later on in the book. The author has so much knowledge to impart that it is presented in due measure so that it can be absorbed and retained. ----Hajji Ahmad Thomson [April 2009]

Islam in Victorian Britain : The Life and Times of Abdullah Quilliam

Paperback - 208 pages                                                                                   by Ron Geaves

This is the first full biography of Abdullah Quilliam (1856-1932), the most significant Muslim personality in nineteenth century Britain. Uniquely ennobled as the 'Sheikh of Islam' of the British Isles by the Ottoman caliph, Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1893, Quilliam, as a charismatic preacher, created a remarkable community of Muslims in Victorian Liverpool, which included a substantial number of converts.

A successful solicitor, Quilliam fought for the rights of the city's poor and, in the high noon of European colonialism, defended the Ottoman caliphate and independent Muslim states through his two international publications, "The Crescent" and "The Islamic World". After 1908, in controversial circumstances, Quilliam left Liverpool and spent the rest of his life living under a pseudonym, but still figured as a major contributor to British Islam in London, where he was involved with the Woking Mosque. Based on exhaustive archival work, Ron Geaves not only provides the first account of Quilliam's colourful and turbulent life, but examines his teachings and considers his legacy for British Muslims today.

About the Author : Ron Geaves is Professor of the Comparative Study of Religion at Liverpool Hope University and has contributed substantially to the study of British Islam, religion in South Asia and fieldwork in religious studies.

Translated into English:  by Muhammad Waseem Afzal [M.A]

A
comprehensive manual covering virtually all the important aspects of the beautiful religion of Islam, written by a prolific scholar of his time. It details the Islamic faith, covering belief, worship, command and principles founded on the Ahl al-Sunnat w'al Jama'at (Greatest majority of Muslims following the Sunnah) creed. Based upon the Hanafi jurisprudence.

The author Khaleel-e-Millat had a 'name' in literary circles as well as in the arena of public speaking. Educated in the spiritual academy of Barkaatiyya Mahrehrah Shareef this practising scholar penned a large number of books, treatises and articles on Islam, which he maintained diligently until he breathed his last while writing the book titled "Maut Kaa Safar" (Journey to Death). Some of these books have been used as training guides and have come under the study of students and scholars alike. Books like ''Sunni Bahishti Zewar"(The Jewels of Paradise or The Heavenly Jewels) have been passionately consumed by the masses, not just in the asian sub-continent but throughout the world.

This book "Hamaaraa Islam" (Islam: The Glorious Religion) has been widely commended by the Ulema [religious scholars] of all backgrounds and sects, not to mention the Sunni scholars spread throughout the globe. This book is on the religious curriculum of many seminaries and schools in Pakistan, India, Europe and USA. The Tanzeem-ul Madaaris Ahl as-Sunnat Pakistan has included this book in the curriculum of all Sunni religious seminaries operating in Pakistan. An organisation of students of Pakistan (Anjuman Talbah-e-Islaam) also has this book in its course of study to educate and train its members and supporters.

Islam, the Glorious Religion was first published in 1955, and after many editions it is now available in English, Dutch, Hindi languages since its original urdu version was first launched as Hamaaraa Islam.

The Testimony of Faith                            by Imam Abdallah Sirajuddin al-Husayni

Paperback - 164 pages

Written by the renowned Scholar and Sufi of Aleppo, Imam ‘Abdallah Sirajuddin al-Husayni Radi Allahu anhu, The Testimony Of Faith elegantly portrays the beauty of the Shahada, the Islamic testimony of faith: There is no god but God and Muhammad (asws) is the Messenger of God. Going beyond cursory explanations, the author provides a precise explanation of its meanings and conditions, and presents an exhaustive discussion on its merits, virtues, and benefits in this life and the Hereafter. Effortlessly taking readers through the depths and details within this basic tenet of faith, Imam ‘Abdallah Sirajuddin unravels the secrets of La ilaha illa Allah, showing how it can purify minds, hearts, and bodies, uplifting them to lofty spiritual realities that are often veiled from man. Called by his contemporaries ‘the Pole of Prophetic love,’ Imam ‘Abdallah demonstrates the inseparable link between affirming Allah’s Oneness and affirming the primordial rank of the Messenger of Allah s as the first of the Messengers created, the last of them sent to mankind, and the first of them to be resurrected. With the precision of a Hadith scholar and the love of a Gnostic, Imam ‘Abdallah Sirajuddin Radi Allahu anhu presents readers with this outstanding work: an authoritative look at the first pillar of Islam that will satisfy students of Islamic theology and spirituality alike.

How strange it is, how can God be disobeyed

And how can the obstinate disbeliever deny Him

When in every movement and stillness

There is always for Him a witness

Desert Encounter                                             by Knud Holmboe (Ali Ahmed)

 Paperback - 281 pages

Knud Valdemar Gylding Holmboe (Born April 22, 1902 Horsens, Danmark - d. October 13, 1931 Aqaba, Jordan) was a Danish journalist and explorer who converted to Islam after travels in North Africa. Born in Horsens he travelled to Morocco as a young man, in order to familiarize himself with Islam and learn the Arabic language.

Upon his conversion, Holmboe changed his name to Ali Ahmed. Driving through the Sahara in an old Chevrolet, he left the beaten track to discover the communities and landscape of the desert. Knud Holmboe was shocked to observe European violence against the indigenous populations of the North African colonies. Based on these travel experiences, he produced this book in 1931 entitled Desert Encounter (Danish: Ørkenen Brænder), in which he condemned the colonial overseers. The book was immediately banned in Italy. The Italian colonial powers were outraged at the suggestion that the Muslim population of Libya was being subjected to genocide.

After completing his book, Knud Holmboe started on his hajj to the city of Makkah. In circumstances that were never fully explained, Knud Holmboe was murdered just south of Aqaba (in modern Jordan) on October 13, 1931. While it has been speculated that Italian intelligence ordered the murder, this claim has never been verified.

JESUS : The Muslim Prophet                          by Louay Fatoohi

 Paperback - 130 pages

History Speaks of a Human Messiah not a Divine Prophet

Book Description : Jesus introduced himself as a prophet of Islam and the awaited Messiah. Like the many Muslim prophets before him, his core message was to call people to worship God. He also tried to reform the practice of Judaism which had been corrupted over the centuries and brought the good news about the coming of Prophet Muhammad May Allah bless him and grant him peace.

Jesus spoke about one God. He never taught that he or anybody else was or could be divine. He even called himself “son of man” to pre-empt the attempts to make him divine after him.

It was Paul who started and promoted the concept that Jesus was man and god. He put Jesus’ divinity at the heart of his theology, creating a religion, Christianity, that Jesus would not have recognized. The deification of Jesus was developed further by later theologians, leading to a Jesus that cannot be distinguished from God. This is the Jesus of the last of the four Gospels, John.

The different Jesuses that early Christianity created can be seen by comparing the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke with John, Paul’s writings, and other New Testament books. Putting all twenty seven books in one volume cannot hide the fact that they do not promote one Jesus. In fact, inconsistency can be clearly seen even within most of these books, including each of the four Gospels.

This book contrasts the human Jesus of the Qur’an with the divine Jesus of Christian sources. It shows that the Qur’anic Jesus is the one that fits in history.

Islam and the Destiny of Man                                                        by Gai Eaton

 Paperback - 262 pages                                               (October 2010 Reprint)

First published in 1994, Islam and the Destiny of Man, is primarily a book written ‘to offer some keys to understanding [Islam] from the point of view of a westerner who is also a Muslim’. Gai Eaton points, in his introduction to some of the areas that have caused, over the past thirteen centuries a lack of understanding between the Islam and the western mindset. Although the book, from the outset addresses itself to the non Muslim, it is equally just as suitable to the Muslim reader, especially those whose point of reference and experience is solely the western world.

Before reaching the body of the text, Gai Eaton writes a gripping account of his own ‘journey’ or ‘odyssey’ to Islam. It is daringly honest, thus all the more compelling to read. One encounters far more than the conventional ‘How I embraced Islam’ as the author opens the front door to the state of his heart, mind and morals, showing the reader how Islam entered. It is intriguing to read how a young boy whose nanny would be sacked for teaching the word ‘God’ to him, was later destined to be blessed with seeing and accepting the truth- Gai Eton has aptly started a book on the destiny of man, by openly discussing his own destiny up to the point of writing.

The body of the text is divided into three parts; ‘An approach to the Faith’, ‘The Making of The Faith’, and ‘The Fruits of the Faith’. The first part takes a historical approach in the widest sense, delineating the way of thinking through the ages and comparing this to the Muslim mind, past and present. The chapter on Europe and Islam is rich in the diversity of citing historical landmarks and their significance. Throughout the author relates and oft times translates how events are understood in the Islamic framework.

But this is a prelude, for with the opening of the second chapter, the curtain is raised, and the symphony of words, meaning, metaphor, linguistics, etymology, past and present perspectives all play together harmoniously. The images are vivid, the language beautiful, the tempo altering to reflect subject matter, delightful for those who love the intricacies of language. However, language here is not used in vain; it has the profound task of conveying the meaning of Islam- the primordial faith, the natural faith of humankind to readers –some of whom may have long given up any belief of God.

The second part of the book takes us to the heart of the primary sources of Islam, the Qur’an and the hadith (sayings) of the Prophet Muhammed, peace and blessings of God be upon him. A chronological approach delineates the history of the Messengership, The City of the Prophet, The Successors and the legacy we have around the world from this. Most importantly, the author tries unrelentingly to explain the relevance and the truth of Islam to the mind and heart of the reader, regularly drawing parallels with the foundations of Christianity, and just as often tackling the almost universal secularism that pervades Western society and thought.

Islam is explained as though Gai Eton were standing at some removed vantage point, watching our dizzying planet swirling, through the ages, through darkness and light, through battles and gains and losses. From this point, his explanations are broad and global, yet personal too- all at the same time. In the third part of the book, areas such as art, environment and mysticism are duly given a balanced introduction replete with memorable anecdotes and examples.

How to Tell Others about Islam

Hardback - 218 pages                                                                                    by Yahya Emerick

All work we do should ideally be for the sake of Allah. That includes the task of bringing someone closer to Allah. That of course means this should not be connected to arrogance, thinking you're the teacher and everyone else should be lucky you've embarked on a crusade to save them. Guidance is from Allah. Make
Du'a (supplication) and make sincere efforts. Also remember that Allah can also misguide you if He wills (we seek refuge in Allah from that).

A guide for Muslims in North America and the West; a manual of technique, advice, and inspiration on how to communicate Islam to non-Muslims, and for weak and non-practicing Muslims.

Topics include, how to approach different ethnic groups, how to prepare for giving dawah, how to handle other religions as well as many other issues. There are also several appendices which offer tips and lists.

Paperback - 104 pages                                                              by  Dr M.A.J Beg

The word civilisation is widely known, yet it is not fully understood by most people. The elite in society claim to understand civilisation but they too can hardly explain it.

Dr M.A.J. Beg ; Born in Gachahar, Dinajpur, in British India in 1944 and brought up and educated in East Pakistan, Dr Muhammad Beg obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Islamic history from Rajshahi University before he proceeded to Christ’s College, Cambridge University, where he obtained a doctorate in Middle Eastern history in 1971. With the assistance of the late Dr Martin Lings (Abu Bakr Siraj al-Din), the famed author of The Life of Muhammad, he was able to obtain temporary work at the British Museum in London and in 1972 he became a British citizen. Then he moved to Malaysia where he taught Islamic history at the National University of Malaysia for more than a decade. Thereafter, he moved to the University of Brunei Darussalam as an Associate Professor of Islamic history and civilization, and lectured there for four years.

Essays On The Origins Of Islamic Civilization

 Paperback - 312 pages

by  Dr M.A.J Beg

Anyone attempting to study the origins of Islamic Civilisation must first ask How Islam originated. Orientalists contend that it owed its origin to Judaism and Christianity. This theory is critically analysed.

Attention is also focussed on the origins of the Islamic State with special reference to the constitution of Madinah. The rights of women and their role in society are discussed under the new dispensation of Islam.

The Image of Islamic Civilization

Paperback - 144 pages                                                                          by  Dr M.A.J Beg

This book is based on the thesis that every civilization is a distinct one. Islamic civilization revolves around the concept of the Unity of God. Hence its art represents the abstract concept of unity and rejects representational art; instead it emphasizes the beauty of abstract forms, such as calligraphy, geometrical patterns and vegetal ornaments. Islamic polity attributes the concept of sovereignty to God and assigns mankind the role of God's representative (Khalifah) on earth. In economics, Islam rejects usury (riba) as principles designed to exploit the poor. In the domain of intellect there is no contradiction between Islam and science. Moreover, Islam elevates the pursuit of science and knowledge of all kinds as an act of divine worship (ibadah). This explains why in its heyday, Islamic civilization, championed the cause of science and religious education, law and literature as worthy endeavours. It even cultivated new and challenging branches of foreign language, such as philosophy, physics, chemistry, mathematics, trigonometry, algebra, botan and medicine and made significant contributions to these branches of human sciences.

Journey to Islam - Diary of a German Diplomat 1951 - 2000

Paperback - 256 pages                                                             by Murad Wilfried Hofmann

A lengthy process, rich in remarkable and thought-provoking events, including compelling encounters with Islamic philosophy, led the author to embrace Islam. His experiences since that time - such as his pilgrimages to Makkah - further deepened his understanding of, and identification with, this "fastest growing religion in Europe.

This "Diary" is, however, much more than a recorded soliloquy. It is a lively introduction to Islam as such - developed in the spiritual confrontation of a Muslim intellectual of European background with the ideology and value system of post-industrial western society.

Dr. Murad Wilfried Hofmann, who accepted Islam in 1980, was born as a Catholic in Germany in 1931. He graduated from Union College in New York and completed his legal studies at Munich University where he received a doctorate in jurisprudence in 1957. He became a research assistant for the reform of federal civil procedure, and in 1960 received an LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School. He was Director of Information for NATO in Brussels from 1983 to 1987. He was posted as German ambassador to Algeria in 1987 and then to Morocco in 1990 where he served for four years. He performed umrah (Lesser Pilgrimage) in 1982 and Hajj (Pilgrimage) in 1992.

The 100 - A Ranking of The Most Influential Persons in History

Paperback - 572 pages                                                                   by Michael H. Hart
A Muslim does not need anyone to prove that our Beloved Prophet Muhammad,
May Allah bless him & grant him peace, is the greatest human that ever lived or will ever live. But when a Muslim hears that a Christian has ranked the beloved Prophet, May Allah bless him & grant him peace, as the most influential person in history, having compared what according to him are the 100 of the greatest religious personalities, statesmen, scientists, explorers, philosophers and artistic and literary figures, he is naturally interested, specially when the second Khalif Umar ibn al-Khattab, May Allah be pleased with him, is ranked as the 51st Most Influential Persons in History.

Michael H. Hart, a Christian American says :

" My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular levels. Of humble origins, Muhammad founded and promulgated one of the world's great religions, and became an immensely effective political leader " --- Extract taken from the book

The Counsels of Religion                  by Imam Abdallah ibn Alawi al Haddad

Paperback - 276 pages                                            Translated into English by Mostafa al Badawi

The Book of Counsels, the author’s largest work, was declared by Imam al-Haddad,
May Allah be pleased with him, to be easy, clear, intelligible to the reader possessed of understanding, and sufficient.” And that it contained the essence of the Ihya Ulum al-Din,’ Imam al-Ghazali’s, May Allah be pleased with him, famous magnum opus.

----

The contents of the book are in many ways similar to those of the Ihya’, despite the fact that the latter is made of four large volumes. The book opens with a discourse on taqwa or God-fearing, leading up to the role of taqwa in attaining to a good ending to life, which means passing into the next life as a Muslim, thereby making certain of reaching paradise.

As parts of taqwa are discussed such outward endeavors as unity among Muslims, the avoidance of division and discord, and the duty to enjoin good and forbid evil. Taqwa also comprises inward things such as contentment with God and His decrees, avoiding distraction and illusory hopes, fear of God, the remembrance of death, avoiding hoping for forgiveness without working for it, while using predestination as a justification.

The essential role of knowledge in Islam is discussed next, followed by four of the five pillars of Islam. The fifth, which in the usual order comes first, the testimony of La ilaha illa’llah, Muhammadun Rasulu’llah is left till the end, where it is explained as the Creed of Ahl al-Sunna wa’l-Jama‘a.

The four other pillars, the ritual prayer, zakat, fasting, and pilgrimage, are discussed not in regard with their outward legal aspect, but rather their dimension of ihsan, which is what one ought to do and what pitfalls to avoid in order to render the act of worship outwardly and inwardly sound and thus acceptable to God.

Among the most important things which make an act of worship acceptable is the degree to which one’s heart is present with God, and to this and to reciting the Qur’an a chapter is devoted. The eighth and ninth chapters are related, since enjoining good and forbidding evil constitute a major part of Jihad. The tenth relates to the rights and duties of people toward each other, such as the duties of political leaders towards their communities, those of judges, those of children toward their parents, parents toward their children, spouses toward each other, relatives, and other such matters with which those who enjoin good and forbid evil should be well acquainted.

Then come two chapters which in the Ihya’ constitute two of its largest sections and so to speak its heart, “Ruinous Things” which are those deeds, emotions, and characters which ruin one’s heart by darkening it, and “Saving Things” which, being their opposites, lead to the heart’s purification and enlightenment.

Ruinous things include everything that is legally forbidden, as well as the crimes of the tongue and ailments of the heart such as arrogance, resentful envy, avarice, and so on.

Reviews:

"Dr. Badawi was a student of a direct descendent of Shaykh Abd'allah al-Haddad, Habib Ahmad Mashur al-Haddad. Those of us fortunate enough to have known him personally consider him a realized spiritual master and sanctified soul, and none can sanctify save God . . . This book is a compelling testimony to the spiritual power and influence of the sanctified soul on the world. It is perhaps more importantly for us a step toward re-introducing the desperately needed path of sanctification." --- Shaykh Hamza Yusuf

"At a time when the Muslim world is suffering from false teachings being spread by extremists, the message of al-Haddad offers a precious means of return to the high ethical and spiritual standards of classical Islam. The publication of this important book should prove a milestone on the way of furthering that blessed effort." --- T. J. Winter

Who Speaks for Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think

Hardback - 219 pages                                         by John L. Esposito and Dalia Mogahed

Are we on the verge of an all-out war between the West and 1.3 billion Muslims? When the media searches for an answer to that question, they usually overlook the actual views of the world's Muslims.

Who Speaks for Islam? is about this silenced majority. This book is the product of the Gallup World Poll's massive, multiyear research study. As part of this groundbreaking project, Gallup conducted tens of thousands of interviews with residents of more than 35 nations that are predominantly Muslim or have significant Muslim populations.

Gallup posed questions that are on the minds of millions: Is Islam to blame for terrorism? Why is there so much anti-Americanism in the Muslim world? Who are the extremists? Where are the moderates? What do Muslim women really want?

Grounded in Gallup World Poll data, not in contentious rhetoric, Who Speaks for Islam? brings data-driven evidence -- the voices of a billion Muslims, not those of individual "experts" or "extremists" -- to one of the most heated and consequential debates of our time.

From the Stage to the Prayer Mat

Paperback - 316 pages                                                            by Rabia Christine Brodbeck

The Story of How a World-Famous Dancer Fell in Love with the Divine

Gracefully chronicling one Western woman's attraction to the universal charm of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, this inspirational memoir chronicles why and how Brodbeck journeyed from the exciting world of modern dance in New York City to Istanbul, where she lovingly embraced Islam.

After several years on famous stages throughout the world, from New York to London, Rabia Christine Brodbeck, a pioneer of modern dance who converted to Islam, narrates her story of enlightenment from chaos to respect in her book, “From the Stage to the Prayer Mat: The Story of How a World-Famous Dancer Fell in Love with the Divine.”

At the 2009 New York Book Festival, her book won best book in the category of spiritual books. Tughra Books, which published Brodbeck's book, celebrated the book's prize with an iftar on Monday in İstanbul and presented her with an award after her win in New York.

“When I was in New York, by chance I came across a masjid run by Turkish Muslims. I was very impressed and started to learn Islamic philosophy and its principles. The imam of the masjid told me what I had needed to hear all of my life,”

This book is for seekers of truth, written as gracefully as she once used to perform on stage, now in adoration for the Divine and attracted to ''the universal charm of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.''

Rabia Christine Brodbeck is a former ballerina.
