The universally accepted traditional prayers have a status beyond compare; because the prayers which Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has revealed, either in the Qur'an al karim or by inspiring them as a direct, first person communication from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, or by a hidden revelation, spoken by the Beloved Prophet Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam or taught to some of his Companions, are by definition more acceptable to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala: hence this collection of’ prayers compiled by Allamah Au bin Sultan Muhammad also known as Mullah Ali Qari. Mullah Ali Qari has said in his preface that
if you read this compilation daily, it is very good. If that is not possible, then it should be read weekly, or monthly, or even once a year; and if even that is not possible then at least once in a lifetime.

Previously this thology was published with the ‘duas’ divided into seven days, for each day of the week. This division was not one which Mullah Ali Qari had done himself as is apparent from his words, but was done at some later stage.

As people, sometimes, are not able to read the entire collection of ‘duas’ in seven days, this Al-Hizb-ul-Azam has been divided into 29 Manzils’, one for each day of the month. About the Author: 'Ali ibn Sultan Muhammad al-Qari (d.1014/1605), popularly known as Mulla 'Ali al-Qari. He was born in Herat, Iran, where he received his basic Islamic education. Thereafter, he travelled to Makkah al-Mukarramah and studied under the celebrated scholar Shaykh Ahmad ibn Hajar Haythami Makki. Mulla 'Ali al-Qari eventually decided to remain in Makkah al-Mukarramah where he taught, died and was laid to rest.
He was one of the great Hanafi masters of hadith and Imams of fiqh, Qur'anic commentary, language, history and tasawwuf, he authored several great commentaries such as al-Mirqat on Mishkat al-masabih in several volumes, a two-volume commentary on Qadi `Iyad's al-Shifa', and a two-volume commentary on Imam al-Ghazali's abridgment of the Ihya entitled `Ayn al-`ilm wa zayn al-hilm (The spring of knowledge and the adornment of understanding).

This is a beautiful [high quality] presentation of invocations for brothers and sisters in tariqah. Although it was published primarily for the students of the shadhilliya order, it can be utilised by other aspirants, providing they have obtained permission from the shaykh of their own tariqah.

In a general way, the purpose of these wirds is not only to train the heart in du‘a', but to eventually eliminate one’s absentmindedness from Allah, and one must strive in them to have presence of heart.

Al-Hizb al-Kabir or ‘The Grand Invocation,’ sometimes called Hizb al-Barr or‘The Litany of the Land,’ is one of the greatest legacies of Abul Hasan al-Shadhili, May Allah be well pleased with him. He is reported to have said of it, “Whoever recites our invocation shall have what we do, and bear what we bear.” He also said (Allah be well pleased with him), “Whoever learns it by heart is one of my companions.” Abul Hasan’s successor Abul ‘Abbas al-Mursi had his disciples recite it after the dawn prayer (subh). One does not speak to others while reciting it except out of necessity, as for example when returning Salams. It is strongly recommended for all men in the tariqa.

Hizb al-Bahr or ‘The Litany of the Sea’ is recited after the midafternoon prayer (‘asr). Some read it at sunrise, at which time it possesses particular properties, and it is also read whenever one is in particular need of something, in which case one makes one’s intention at the words wa sakhkhir lana hadha l-bahr (“and subject to us this sea”). Like all of the hizbs of the tariqa, it should be memorized and recited from one’s heart as if it were one’s own words, with complete attention to whom one is addressing it.

Al-Latifiyya or ‘The Invocation of Ya Latif (“O Most Gentle, Subtle, Kind”)’ one thousand times, followed by the supplications and dhikrs that close it, is usually done in a group on Tuesday nights. It may be done by anyone in the tariqa, with anyone else (such as one’s family), though disciples living in one area should get together for it if possible. Sheikh al-Kurdi used to relate that both those who recite it and the place where they are enter into the sphere of this divine name and its protection from troubles and afflictions. It may also be recited by oneself after the General Wird (strongly recommended during trials in one’s life), in which case one begins with A‘udhu bi Llahi as-Sami‘i l-‘Alimi min ash-Shaytani r-rajim (“I take refuge in Allah the All-hearing, the All-knowing, from the accursed Devil”) three times, then the last four verses of Surat al-Hashr (Koran 59:21–24), and then recites Ya Latif 129 times, before finishing it with the supplication used when it is recited in a group.

Dua Al-Jawshan Al-Kabeer / The Supplication of the Major Chain-Armour

It has been mentioned in the book, Balad al-Amin and the Misbah of Kafa`mi that Imam `Ali ibn al-Husain Sayyid as-Sajjidin related from his father from his grandfather the Prophet of Allah, Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam, that this supplication was taught by the Angel Jibra’il, alayhis salam, to the Prophet, Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam, during one of the battles.

It was in one of the wars that the Prophet, Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam, had taken part in which he had a very heavy and expensive coat of armor on to protect himself.

It is related that the coat was so heavy that it was hurting the body of the Prophet, Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam. In this state, the Angel Jibra’il, alayhi salam, came to the Prophet, Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam, and said:

“O’ Muhammad! Your Lord conveys his salutations to you and has said to take this coat of armor (Jawshan) and to recite it as this is a protection for you and your Ummah.”

At this point, the Angel continued to give the Prophet, Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam, an explanation on the greatness of this supplication, which we will omit from here due to lack of space.

However it suffices us to state that whoever reads this supplication with a pure intention in the BEGINNING of the month of Ramadhan, Allah will grant him sustenance on the Night of Power and will create for this person 70,000 Angels who will all be busy in the praising and glorification of Allah and will give this reward to the person who has read this supplication.

With this said, we see the greatness of the recitation of this supplication. In addition, it is mentioned that whoever reads this supplication three times during the month of Ramadhan, Allah will make the hell-fire forbidden on him and would make it obligatory for that person to go into Paradise.

For such a person, Allah will also appoint two Angels to protect that person from all evils (in this world) and he would be in the protection of Allah for as long as he is alive.

In the final Hadith of this supplication, it has been narrated from Imam Husain ibn `Ali, Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu, that,

“My father Amir al-Mo’minin `Ali ibn Abi Talib, Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu, had bequeathed to me that I should memorize and protect this supplication and write it on the Kafan (burial shroud) and that I should teach it to my family members and he highly encouraged me to read this supplication as it contains 1,000 names of Allah and within these names is the Greatest Name of Allah (Ism-e-A`dham).”
